Wukoki ruins is built into a massive rock table that seems to grow out of the cinder landscape south of Sunset Crater on the edge of the Painted Desert. The view to the south and west is punctuated with the remains of ancient volcanoes. These black dunes are covered with patches of wild grasses and in summer, with the rains, various brightly colored wild flowers too. The San Francisco Peaks to the south, in Flagstaff, are crested with aspen and pine. |
One can watch afternoon thunderstorms form to the north from atop this pueblo's rock foundation some, violent tempests that roll off the Kaibab Plateau in summer, build to great white columns far into the heavens or sweep cross the entire landscape like swells on some black, angry sea. |
